Head Spa FAQ
Because this therapy is still quite unique in Australia, many guests have questions before their first visit. Below you’ll find answers to some of the most common questions about our Head Spa treatments — from how the ritual works to what you might feel during the experience.

If you're new to Head Spa, these answers will help you arrive feeling informed and relaxed.

What is a Shirodhara Head Spa?
Shirodhara is an ancient Ayurvedic ritual where warm, soothing oil flows in a steady stream across your forehead, calming the nervous system, promoting clarity, deep rest, and emotional balance.

At Stretch & Soothe, the oil is gently poured from a traditional copper bowl, creating a rhythmic flow that encourages deep relaxation and mental stillness.
What are the main benefits of Shirodhara?
This deeply sensory treatment is known to support nervous-system regulation and may help:
-
Reduce stress, anxiety, and fatigue
-
Improve sleep and mental clarity
-
Relieve headaches and gently soothe the mind
Is Shirodhara good for scalp and hair health?
Yes! The warm herbal oils nourish the scalp, encourage circulation, and support healthy hair and scalp balance while deeply relaxing the nervous system.
How does Shirodhara help with anxiety and stress?
The warm oil flows rhythmically across the forehead, stimulating calming pressure points and encouraging the brain to shift into a more relaxed state. This gentle repetition helps quiet mental activity and supports the body’s natural relaxation response — creating space for inner stillness and emotional release.
What is the difference between Shirodhara and Japanese Head Spa?
Our Head Spa blends elements of both traditions.

Shirodhara is an Ayurvedic oil ritual where warm oil flows rhythmically across the forehead (the third eye) to calm the nervous system and promote deep relaxation. Japanese Head Spa techniques focus on scalp cleansing, massage, and water flow, often incorporating specialised rinsing methods.

At Stretch & Soothe, the experience combines both — beginning with a Shirodhara oil pour using a traditional copper bowl, followed by scalp massage, cleansing rituals, and our signature Water Halo rinse.
What is the Water Halo rinse?
The Water Halo rinse is a gentle flow of warm water that cascades around the scalp during the treatment. Inspired by Japanese Head Spa techniques, this step enhances relaxation, removes oil and product buildup, and creates a deeply soothing sensory experience.
Many clients describe this as one of the most calming parts of the session.
Should I wash my hair before a Head Spa?
No preparation is required. Your hair and scalp will be thoroughly cleansed during the session as part of the ritual, which includes double shampooing, conditioning, and the Water Halo rinse. Arriving with your natural scalp oils is perfectly fine.
Will my hair be oily after the treatment?
The warm oil used during the Shirodhara ritual is removed during the cleansing stage of the treatment. Most clients leave with hair that feels clean, soft, and nourished rather than oily.
Are there any safety considerations for Shirodhara?
Shirodhara is usually safe when done in a serene, professional setting. Oils are warmed carefully, and eye protection is provided.
It's best avoided if you have:
-
Fever or acute illness
-
Open wounds or skin sensitivities on the head
-
Severe sinus issues or neurological concerns

If you have medical conditions affecting the scalp, severe sinus issues, or neurological concerns, please speak with your practitioner before booking.
How often should I get a Head Spa?
Many clients enjoy a Head Spa every 3–4 weeks for ongoing scalp care and relaxation, though some book occasionally for a deeper reset when feeling stressed or fatigued.
